Can Breastfeeding Protect Your Baby Against Air Pollution?

One major breastfeeding benefit is the antibodies it provides to your baby for building immunity.  But, can breastfeeding protect your baby against air pollution?  Good question, and according to new research conducted by the University of the Basque Country, Spain, it may.

The study began in 2006 and looked at 638 women and their newborn babies through 15 months of age, then rechecks the children at age eight.  Researcher Aitana Lertxundi focuses on the developmental effects PM2.5 (pollution particle matter) and nitrogen dioxide exposure have on the infancy stage of life. The study put focus on the inverse relationship between PM2.5 exposure and motor development among babies as well as mental development where nitrogen dioxide is concerned.  The outcome demonstrates that breastfeeding has a protective effect as neither atmospheric pollutant had any effect on babies receiving breastmilk for at least four months of time.

The list of health benefits that breast milk has on both mother and baby seems endless.  It is no wonder so many women have elected to ditch commercial formula, instead opting to breastfeed.  Breastfeeding is such an important commitment, and the benefits grow increasing stronger with consistency and longevity.  Health professionals believe that optimal benefits are obtained when exclusive breastfeeding is performed for the first six months of life, and continue thereafter in conjunction with solid foods to at least age one.

In an effort to remain committed to breastfeeding, women are more frequently choosing to have the added support of a double electric breast pump.  Getting a double electric breast pump covered at 100% through insurance is highly probable since most policies offer coverage for breastfeeding equipment and supplies.
